Here's my weekly progress for the magazine comp 1 project & also a rough plan.
Tracking my weekly progress has made it easier for me to check on what I did in class and I think this might help me with my exams, but other than that the to do feature has made it so that I know what to do next without having to consult a friend, and occasionally, when I'm scrolling through to find my to do list, I often stumble upon lessons that I've forgotten about and I could implement them into my magazine to make it better, for example I saw the "media studies meander" and I instantly remembered what we did on that lesson, on that occasion it didn't really help because that was more focused on section B but it did get me to remember that I had to tweak my statement of intent because I just remembered a few things about audience.WEEK 1
What we've learnt this week:
- We had a game to help us remember the different active theories and their creators
- Our teacher introduced us to the brief for the magazine that we have to follow for this component, we learnt some of the many magazine terminologies and we had a little classwork/schoolwork that identifies the features and terminologies of our chosen magazines that we used for research
- This week we learnt about the media industry and terms such as production, distribution and exhibition. In that lesson I found it hard to memorize these terms but I do understand the meaning and job of these sections of the steps of putting out media in the industry.
- We also learnt about democratization of mass media, indigenous media production and cultural imperialism, terms surrounding international media having to warp themselves to adjust to groups and surrounding media around the world having to be represented
Tasks for this week:
- No assignments this week because its the first week of the Term.
Problems I've encountered this week:
- I've had to adjust slightly to memorizing even more media studies terminologies, this time relating to magazines, such as mastheads, cover images, boxouts, inserts, etc.
Possible solutions to my problems:
- Try to remember the terms by studying after school.
To-do list:
- Update my magazine terminology practice blog post under "Comp 1" label
Weekly reflection:
- There was quite a lot of Terminologies, after a few days, I've gotten to understand & remember most of them from the get go but I still had a few that I forgot. The labeling activity was also quite fun & I didn't find it too difficult.
WEEK 2
What we've learnt this week:
- On Monday we learnt Stuart Hall's representation theory.
- I began to start my big detail analysis of the front cover of my magazine, I found it difficult to find and make a structure but my teacher gave me a list of questions to answer for each subheading
- The homework we received last week was completed on time and without issue however I found
Tasks for this week:
- Do the 2 detailed magazine analyses and the 4 less detailed ones

WEEK 3
What we've learnt this week:
- In class, we further studied Stuart hall's representation theory, we learnt new terms such as stereotype - an oversimplified excepted look/behavior of a social group - and countertypes - subversions of stereotypes -
Tasks for this week:
- This week we were tasked to do some amount of magazine research, my first research piece was on my own magazine and I finished it well although I struggled to incorporate media studies keywords and teachings in my analysis at first
- There were multiple minor problems this week such as other classes' assignments taking my time away from doing the research, however my biggest setback is that there is a lack of car magazines in my class that I could borrow for further research.
Solutions:
- I could try to find and use inspiration from sports magazines among other magazines genre/types that I find would fit my style as I don't plan to conform with all the car magazine tropes
To-do list:
- Finish statement of intent
- Finish magazine research
Weekly reflection:
- I've haven gotten enough time to research what kind of demographics and psychographics to use for my statement of intent, I mostly struggle with filling in the Psychographic portion of the statement of intent so far.
WEEK 4
What we've learnt this week:
- Learned about Steve Neale's genre theory which states that genres are a similar group of media texts that are based upon an original "template" and to be part of the genre, a media text has to have some subversions of the template - dissimilarities - in order to be its own thing but still part of the genre.
- Continued work on magazine research development, I had to make and decide what content I was to put on my magazine: such as the images, themes and conventions I would conform or subvert.
To-do list/Tasks:
- Keep working on the research development
- Think of the photos to use in the magazine
WEEK 5
- We reviewed about the theories in the form of a Media Studies Meander which is my teacher's version of a gallery walk
- Besides that we were told to put 3 new posts titled ; Terminology, Technical Skill and double page spread R&D
- We were also tasked to do the R&D today and I struggled with filling all the fields on the table because my magazine had some subversions to the normal convention that would've otherwise fit the fields. The problem was easily solved, all I had to do was ask for guidance on what I should put in the table from the teacher and I did, my teacher simply suggested simply leave the sections I didn't need blank.
To-do list
- Finish R&D
- Make posts
Week 6
- We completed the double page spread development and research
- Learnt about traditional and new media
- We did our first simulation of doing section A, we watched the clip 4 times for the first time and then we began to make our first attempts at them so that we can review and get comments on how to improve them.
Week 7
- This week we were tasked to complete a checklist that relates to section B. I have completed most of the checklist but I think that it would take some time to complete all of them because I'm finding it hard to manage my time properly.
- So my To-Do list for this week would be to finish the checklist and upload all of my missing blogs
Week 8
- I have checked out a few of my checklists like the brief and I'm also close to finishing my critical self reflection after I have studied and reviewed good examples of critical self reflections in order to find how to do it well. This has also helped me review my work and how I should go about it next time if I get the chance to.
Week 9
- My critical self reflection is almost done, I just need a few more slides. Next time I might want to use my time more wisely because I have had the chance to finish it twice this week but I didn't get to.
Start of Semester 2
Week 1 semester 2
- Today we learnt about how to layout a magazine and the teacher showed us tips such as using borders and margins to make the magazine neater.
- We also learnt about media consolidation and we reviewed and discussed topics surrounding vertical and horizontal mergers in media with the collaborative notes which we use to put notes and comment, fix or discuss our opinions
- We learnt about the copyright and characters that have been released to the public domain, which is another term we learnt about when learning about copyright
Problems:
- I had problems managing my google draw because it was new to me
- I had limited time so i felt rushed when taking the pictures
- There was a lack of subjects for photos
Week 2 semester 2
- This week we learnt about how to properly make a layout for magazines and the teacher gave us tips on how to clean up our designs such as using the margins and aligning the components within the cover to line up cleanly.
- We had to do some practice layouts with google draw but I found it hard to use because I was unfamiliar with the UI and it was not very easily usable. So next time I design my magazine cover, I will use a different website or software that has a more user-friendly UI.
Week 3 semester 2
- I've started seriously brainstorming and making drafts of my cover page,
- Create a front cover development blog
- Make serious drafts of 2 of the front cover sketches
Week 4 semester 2
- This week we did test preparations and I learnt that I most likely have to come up with a structure and multiple case studies before the test because it took some time for me to think of a good structure along with my case study even if it was a group work assignment.
- We also started out critical self reflection and I learnt how to reflect and improve how I can criticize myself and therefore, learn from my mistakes
Week 5 semester 2
- We did our projects this week: front cover, contents page and double page spread. None of them are finished
- I also need to complete all of them
- Front cover, I need to add some more details and polish the layout
- Contents page, is missing everything but the title & layout idea
- Double page spread , I need to find a suitable photo from my gallery but I have an idea for how to implement the article to it, idea from classic Mercedes mag
Week 6 semester 2
- I started on my double page spread and contents page and got some feedback from my friends on how to better improve my magazine, first was criticism on my margins and second was my palette that I chose
Week 7 semester 2
- I've finished everything before the deadline which is today on this week, hopefully
