Research

This post is where I document all the research I have done and found for my project

Research 1: The Final: Attack on Wembley

(trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYH7gRgJ2Bc

1. What is the subgenre?
Sports, Riots, Crime Documentary

2. Who is the target audience?
English people, Sports fans

3. What Documentary conventions were used?
It uses Interviews, shots of the location, reactions of the people, second hand footage from the day, a plot twist/changing the narrative vibe from positive to negative.

4. Does it conform with the genre?
It conforms (In my opinion) because it uses most of the common shots often found in crime documentaries. It also uses a narrative switch around from positive to a negative note.

5. How does it create suspense with technical elements?

Camera
    - Shaky cam
    - Medium shots to show the reactions of the people affected

Sound
    - It was cheery music from the start until the part where a breach was mentioned
    - The shouting/chanting from the crowd turns from happy/cheering to shouting and rowdy screaming

Mise-en-scène
    - Lots of English people
    - Wembly

Edit
    - Fast cut
    - Placing the rioting after the calm England bit

6. What parts did I find inspiring ?
The parts where they used hand held footage

Self Reflection: I chose this team because I believe that we have good natural flowing chemistry and it would make it so that improvising scenes would be easier, I also think that having Louis would be a good addition as he could be our director figure and feed us ideas on how to act.

Choosing this team was the correct decision as even if we did have minor problems like lack of efficiency & difficulty finding time to shoot or work together during the first few weeks, on the final 2 weeks we finally got into our rhythm and shooting scenes became fun and understandable.

WEEK 1

In week 1 we tried to remember our old key terms that we've learnt last year such as U&G and camera angles, we also got introduced to the brief for our first project (documentary intro) I cant wait to do camera work & planning for this project.

WEEK 2

This week, we did some research in class & I got to analyze from my teacher's examples on how to more thoroughly research the intros. The research was on a few crime documentary intros where we got to identify the conventions and norms of the genre.
        To do
            1. Create a team for the upcoming project by next Tuesday
            2. Complete 3 more research pieces by next Tuesday
            3. Create planning or start thinking of the ideas for the project.

WEEK 3

We started on our statement of intent and I think it helped us create a general idea of what we are going to make. We also did some more research for our project. We also learnt in class about media regulation and how it affects content we create and consume.
        To do
            1. Finish Statement of Intent
            2. Find potential actors
            3. Look for inspirations and ideas for shots

WEEK 4

This week we started with our risk assessments and also continued our statement of intent, we have finalized a general idea of the documentary, which we chose as young celebrity scandal/crime murder. We think this would be the easiest to pick as we ourselves have some interest in this topic meaning that by doing this genre, we can also target likeminded people similar to us.
        To do
            1. Finish Statement of Intent
            2. Start on stroyboard/script
            3. Do some practice shots.

WEEK 5

There was a lesson where we watched and analyzed a documentary of an infamous Indonesian murder case. From this, I liked the idea of selective construction where they showed "unnecessary" scenes in order to form a character with some of the people interviewed, and this changed my view on them.
        To do
            1. Finish storyboard
            2. Finalize the Film planning
            3. Post Location scout

WEEK 6

This week we didn't do a lot of new things, just continuing off of the last week's to do list, but we did have a theory lesson where we took a look at a tv series episode as an example of regulation in the media and this lesson helped me with the script a little as I learnt how better how to convey my meanings like for example how spiteful one of the characters was.  Also we were introduced to our critical reflection.
            To do
                1. Finalize Film Planning
                2. Record more a few more B-roll shots
                3. Complete extra research
                4. Read examples of Critical reflection essays

WEEK 7

This week we examined examples of audience power in the media and this really made me realize that our team might have to adjust our works in order to match what we think the audience wants as they have power over media companies.  My team also started the editing and post production processes.
            To do
                1. Record interview, establishing shots
                2. Record dispatcher voice lines
                3. Edit voice audio to sound like phone call
                4. Analyze good film color grading and how to achieve it.

WEEK 8

The entire week was entirely focused on project lessons and we focused on doing our blogposts during class times. During this time the teacher also gave us feedback on how to make our interview section more interesting by using more sounds and B-roll and also the teacher recommended we adjust the audio and tweak it to sound alright on multiple audio devices, not only our headphones that our editor used to edit.

Self Reflection: This weekly progress has helped me see what I've struggled with each week, and admittedly, even if I don't view this blog very often, writing down these reflections have helped me remember the problems and solutions for each problem I faced each week.

Documentary Project Brief

This is the brief for my documentary project

Self Reflection: I think that this brief is very interesting and I would like to see myself looking for good shot angles and compositions, I think this would be a good opportunity to get better at videography and also blocking mise en scen in shots.
